In Memory

Steve Kovacich

Steve Kovacich

Stephen (Steve) John Kovacich, born on March 22, 1947, to Marilyn June Kovacich and John Stephen Kovacich in Watsonville, California, passed away on July 1, 2024, following complications from a heart condition.

Steve spent his formative years on Rodriguez Street in Watsonville alongside his sister Jonna Kovacich and cousins Peter and Kathy Kovacich. He cherished his upbringing in a tight-knit community, where he forged lasting friendships and fond memories, often intertwined with the local charm of a family restaurant, Del Monte, on Walker Street.

After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Sacramento State University, Steve returned to Watsonville and began his career at Bank of America. His aptitude for financial management and his genuine interest in local businesses soon led him to Unikool Company in Salinas, where he dedicated 41 years of his life in partnership with the Mills, D’arrigo, and Bengard families.

Steve's life was marked not only by his professional achievements but by his love for socializing and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. Whether engaging in lively discussions at the King’s Den, Salinas Grower’s Pub or relaxing on his front porch with his beloved wire-haired Terrier Loui, Steve found joy in the company of friends and neighbors.

He was a steadfast pillar of support for his sister Jonna and her children, Stefka Kovacich Anderson and Jack Kovacich Anderson. Sunday breakfasts were common for Steve and Jonna. Family bbqs, birthday parties and holidays serve as fond memories for his surviving sister, niece, nephew and the extension of family and friends who knew Steve well. Fondly known as “Uncle Dede” he always knew how to bring smiles and laughter to those around him.

In his later years, Steve looked forward to annual hunting and fishing trips with a close-knit group of friends. The food, laughter and fellowship these yearly trips provided brought Steve great joy.

Steve's passing leaves a void in the lives of his family and many friends, who will fondly remember his laughter, warmth, and unwavering friendship. A Rosary will be held on Tuesday, August 27 at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel at 5pm. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 29 at Corral de Tierra Country Club from 1-4pm, where we will gather to honor and share the stories of how Steve touched our lives. Steve will forever remain in our hearts, as a beacon of friendship, generosity, and joy.

Steve had a deep affection for animals, especially dogs. He valued the wisdom that studying history provides. He possessed an affinity for war stories, stories of heroes, perhaps rooted from his father's service as a United States Veteran. Steve loved the great outdoors, often seeking landscapes reminiscent of Old Western tales. Steve also had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and believed strongly in the importance of education for young people. And as a two-time cancer survivor, he held a deep gratitude for medical research and advancements. In recognition of Steve’s diverse interests and in honor of his generous spirit, donations may be made to a charity of your choice
